On June 20, we celebrate the Most Holy Theotokos Odiyitria.
The icon of Panayia Odiyitria, is historically the first icon of the Church, narrated by the Evangelist Luke. According to the synaxaristic tradition, the Holy evangelist created the living image of the Most Holy Theotokos and she received it with great joy and blessed it saying: "the grace of my being made by me will be with her."
This icon, preserved in Palestine, was sent to Constantinople, during the reign of Theodosius II The Little, By The Empress Eudokia, as a gift to Theodosius’ sister Saint Pulcheria and was kept by her in the Monastery of the Guides, of which she was the founder. The icon performed countless miracles (such as the rescue of Constantinople. The icon was finally destroyed by the Ottomans during the fall of 1453.
A copy of the icon is in the Monastery of Xenophontos on Mount Athos.
